I have been working as an Audit Intern at Tate & Tryon for 7 weeks now. My experience at T&T has far exceeded my expectations. Although I definitely expected to learn a few things, I came in expecting that most of my time would be spent doing stereotypical intern work--scanning, filing, entering information into databases, etc. However, in my time at T&T I have had opportunities to apply information from school, learn new information, and meet great people.
The first week all the interns met everyone and had training on software the firm uses and some of the projects we would get to work on. Since then, I have gotten to work on 990 tax returns and 5500s. I also got the opportunity to go on and audit and to participate in staff training. Of course I have spent some of my time scanning, filing and updating databases, but the other projects I have worked on have given me a great sense of what it would be like to work at a public accounting firm.
My first assignment was to try working on a 990. I had never even really looked at any type of tax return before, so this turned out to be a challenging task. Two of the other interns and I ended up working on one 990 together first, and this helped the process make more sense to all of us. Completing 990s has become much easier for me. I am getting much more comfortable and familiar with the returns, and everyone here is always willing to take their time and help! I finished a 990 earlier this week, and am working on another one now. The 990s I have been working on recently seem much less intimidating than the first 990 I was faced with.
A few weeks ago, I got the opportunity to go on audit for a few days. This experience showed me what it would be like to actually work at T&T. I got to do a few things on the audit, and really enjoyed the experience. Going to a client is a big change from being in the office, so I am really glad I got to experience both aspects of the job.
Recently, all of the interns got to participate in three days of audit staff training. I have never taken an auditing class before, so this training was somewhat confusing. However I did learn a lot, and it will definitely help me when I do take auditing. I also think the class helped me to relate my knowledge from school to my experiences at work.
I have enjoyed my experience here at Tate & Tryon. I have felt welcome and comfortable around everyone, and also enjoy doing the work. In my time here, I have gotten to know a few people and they seem to genuinely enjoy their job. I think T&T is a great place and I am very glad I have had the opportunity to intern here.
